Final Animation

Inspiration and Process

I was inspired to make this animation by some artwork I saw while browsing reddit: Little Bird by Luk.  I started in Maya by creating the rough shape of the house and a sort of dragon creature on top of it. Doing organic modeling where characters required smooth edges took a bit of time to figure out. After completing a decent looking dragon, slug type creature I modeled the wizards and added details to there house. I modeled and the stone with the blue writing on it next using lines and a smoothed cube. I then filled the scene in with the green hills, pink trees. rocks, red grass, and towers I borrowed from my project 5. I used Arnold for the rendering and had to scale back on some of the render settings because of time constraints. I used Adobe Premiere and Photoshop to add the title and credits screens as well as all the sounds and music. All sounds where taken from freesound.org and the music from Youtube's free music library. All sounds and music are copyright free and everything in the scene was modeled by me.

Some Disney 12 Principals Employed

Squash and stretch: When the dragon prepares to shoot the fire ball it squashes and when releasing the fireball stretches. All projectiles have a small to very large amount of squash and stretch added to help show speed.

Anticipation: The dragon squashes backward in preparation to shoot the fireball. The wizard, when firing the larger projectile, prepares for the shot somewhat dramatically. He bends backward and one leg comes up and forward while his staff goes up.

Staging: I used different camera angles to control the audiences eyes, adjusting to a closer view of the object of interest as needed. I also tried to pay attention to placing points of interest in the thirds of the screen.

Follow through and overlapping action: The dragon follows through after shooting the fire ball. The wizard follows through after firing the large projectile. The wizards staff lags behind the motion of his body slightly.

Appeal: I decided to make the scene have a cute, fantasy style to it. I added elements to the background to make the scene as interesting as possible while not distracting from the main characters.
